The Journey of Self-Expression Through Sari Draping – Dhruv Dobby

So, here’s to breaking boundaries, to redefining fashion norms, and to embracing our authentic selves. My journey might have started with sarees, but it’s become a celebration of individuality, of non-binary queerness, and of unapologetic expression. Join me in asking yourself those transformative questions, and let’s journey towards self-acceptance and empowerment together.

Rediscovering the Treasures of My Mother’s Wardrobe

It all began with a closet full of memories. When my mother passed away, her sarees were lovingly preserved by my father. These stunning pieces of heritage carried stories of yesteryears. I saw more than just fabric; I saw a connection to my past, a thread that tied me to my roots.

The Lockdown Lightbulb Moment

Then came the lockdown, a period of solitude and introspection. While the world retreated indoors, I found myself yearning for the joy of dressing up. As I adorned sarees, the idea of wearing them in unconventional ways sparked a lightbulb moment. The lockdown proved to be a catalyst, pushing me to break free from the norms I had unknowingly confined myself to.

Permission to Be Myself

In that moment of revelation, I realized that the only thing stopping me was me. Why had I hesitated to explore the full potential of these beautiful garments? What was holding me back from embracing my unique identity? The answer was clear: societal expectations and fear of judgment. And so, I decided to give myself permission to embrace my true self wholeheartedly.

Breaking Down Gender Stereotypes

Cross-dressing? No, it’s much more than that. I’m non-binary. In a world that loves to compartmentalize, I refuse to fit into a binary notion of gender. Our culture, our history, and even our gods defy these restrictions. Our temples are adorned with images that beautifully blur the lines of gender. My journey isn’t about impersonation; it’s about authenticity.

The Power of Non-Binary Queerness

“Queer” is not just a label; it’s a powerful umbrella term that encompasses a myriad of identities. It’s about reclaiming who I am on my terms. My pronouns are they/them, and my expression is fluid. I stand at the crossroads of fashion, identity, and creativity, unapologetically embracing every facet of myself.

Revamping My Wardrobe, Revamping Myself

I embarked on a journey of self-reinvention, not just in terms of fashion but in terms of my entire existence. I questioned every choice I had ever made, every subconscious boundary I had set. Why was I limiting myself? Who was I trying to impress? The answers were enlightening, and they gave me the courage to start anew.

With each sari I draped, I discovered a new facet of myself. It wasn’t about what others thought; it was about how I felt. These garments, once confined to special occasions, now became a canvas for my everyday expression. From dancing to shopping, from brunches to clubs, sarees accompanied me everywhere. Their versatility mirrors my own.

As I sit here reflecting on this journey, I’m compelled to share a message with you, dear reader. Don’t wait for a lockdown to free yourself from the chains of conformity. Ask yourself “why?” and “why not?” Explore your wardrobe, your choices, your identity, and your style. The opinions of others pale in comparison to the relationship you have with yourself.
