Ever since I was a child, the beauty and elegance of the saree have captivated me. It’s a garment that carries memories, culture, and art within its folds. As I embarked on my professional journey, my passion for sarees led me down a unique path, one that I am grateful to have pursued.
Sari: A Love for Textiles and Traditions:
Growing up in an Indian household, I witnessed the grace of sarees through my mother and family members. Each saree tells a different story, representing various regions and traditions of India. My fascination with textiles and handwoven artistry naturally gravitated towards the saree. This intrinsic connection ignited a lifelong passion.
Embarking on a Professional Journey:
Little did I know that my love for sarees would eventually shape my professional journey. Through Adim Handwoven, I found an avenue to not only indulge in my passion but also contribute to the preservation of traditional weaving techniques. Working with different weaving clusters became a part of my identity, as I aimed to highlight the beauty and intricacy of handwoven creations.
Choosing Weaving Clusters:
Selecting the right weaving clusters was a crucial step in our initiative. Adim’s commitment to supporting artisans in their craft led us to three distinct clusters: Bhuj, known for extra weft weaving; Banaras, renowned for various Banarasi weaving styles; and Pochampalli, celebrated for its Ikkat weaving. These choices were driven by the desire to showcase diverse techniques and regional signatures.
Reviving Art and Craft:
The journey wasn’t without challenges. Reviving dying arts and crafts required patience and understanding. Some artisans had stopped creating intricate works due to market trends. We learned to collaborate with them, paying them fairly for their time and skill. The result was the resurrection of stunning masterpieces that resonated with sensitive customers who appreciated the value of handmade art.
Handloom vs. Power Loom:
Distinguishing between handloom and power loom creations is both an art and a science. While power looms can replicate the front of a saree, the back often reveals the difference in neatness and precision. The suppleness of a handloom saree sets it apart, with each thread lovingly woven by hand. The distinctiveness is visible in raised motifs and a unique feel, reminding us of the craftsmanship behind every piece.
The Banarasi Evolution:
Banaras holds a special place in my heart. Its iconic red Banarasi sarees are adored across India. While these remain timeless, we aimed to reintroduce the diverse color palettes that were once part of Banarasi tradition. Exploring seasonal colors and cotton Banarasi sarees brought forth a new dimension to the heritage. These sarees, when draped or repurposed as home decor, embody both tradition and modernity.
Sari as a Lifestyle:
Saris transcend mere clothing. They are a way of life, adapting to seasons, occasions, and personal style. I recall my mother donning cotton sarees for Delhi summers and reserving silks for winters. The saree is versatile; it can exude modernity or tradition, depending on how it’s worn and styled. The ability to mold a saree to fit any occasion is a testament to its timelessness.
My journey with sarees has been a deeply enriching one. It’s a testament to the power of passion and how it can shape a professional path. Through Adim Handwoven, I’ve been fortunate to contribute to the revival of traditional crafts and showcase the rich heritage of India through sarees.
